Great Britain has a history of long-seated monarchs: George III, James VI, Henry III, Edward III and the first Queen Elizabeth to name a few.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has officially become the longest reigning British monarch. She surpasses the rule of Queen Victoria, her great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria, who sat upon the throne for 63 years, 216 days.

Yet, “it’s not a record to which I ever aspired,” she stated. In fact, neither of these record-holding monarchs chose the role, nor ever expected to reach the throne. Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI and the abdication of Edward VII; Victoria inherited the throne in 1837 following the death of her father’s three elder brothers.

However, as Prime Minister John Major remarked, “Whilst Prime Ministers have come and gone, celebrities have come and gone, life has changed, she and the monarchy have been an absolute constant in their lives and I think that is very reassuring.”

We think so too.

Truefitt & Hill congratulates Her Majesty on reaching this historic landmark.
